Friday Finds: Startup Support

October 26, 2012 by Amie M

I’ve been trolling some interesting websites as of late, with the mind to do Christmas gifts with a little more meaning. The many websites that offer group buy-ins to help a cause or independent get the capital needed to make a difference or get started on a project have been catching my eye. The merchant offers incentives or thank-you’s to various levels of support, and some of those incentives would make awesome gifts. If it is a tangible product, they even offer the product itself.

After perusing Indiegogo, here are some of the fundraisers I am loving.

True Patriot is an all Canadian comic book adventure drawn and featuring some Canadian loves. The artists are those who have graced TV supporting cartoons that include Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and award-winning comics such as Two Generals and Runaways.

Or there are some great techie projects that could use a boost:

The BRIGHT Solar Lamp and Phone Charger is a useful tool in our North American lifestyles. But the main purpose behind the design of the lamp is to replace kerosene lamps in countries such as Kenya, Tanzania and Bangladesh through entrepreneurial opportunities for women.

1:Face Watch is also a tech project with a heart. By picking the colour of the watch you would like, your money goes towards that charity’s initiative. Some of those initiatives are building a well, supplying charcoal efficient stoves, feeding children and providing AIDS treatment.

Other cool websites like this are Kickstarter, and GoFundMe.

Neat – this works for you to help me with my Christmas shopping too! I like doing the shoe boxes, or supporting things like buying a goat through Samaritan’s Purse or Partners International… John got two hens for somewhere in Africa (I can’t look it up right now!) – and then got me two plastic hens/chickens, so I had something to remember it by… Thinking we might do the same this year for Caleb, with like, a plush or something to represent! WWF will send you a stuffed plush for the animal you help save…

I’ve seen the UNICEF ones before, where you can buy school supplies, well pumps, mosquito nets, a goat. And I’ve done the WWF one, where my friend got a polar bear “rescued” in her name. I think it’s a great idea to look at Samaritan’s Purse and others, too. Wheels are turning!

BTW, it was good seeing you yesterday! You and Caleb look great.
